For many years I've allowed insulinoma ferrets access to a bit of sugary
substances.  When surgery hadn't been an option and medications weren't
stabilizing them, I add a bit of dextrose or honey to their high protein
recipe servings.  The key being that the 'sugar' was eaten with 'high meat
protein' meals.  Sugary substances alone can cause a spike and crash
affect so for insulinoma ferrets it's necessary that they eat high protein
supplemental meals frequently.  I work away from home during the day so I
feed recipe 1-2 times before I leave in the morning then immediately when
I get home at night and 1-2 times before I go to bed.  This seems to keep
them stabilized.
 
Many years ago I used clumping litter till I read an article about kittens
dying from it.  If a ferret plays in it they can get it clumped in their
mouth, eyes or nose or if it gets into their food dish and they eat it...
It makes sense that if it clumps to fluids outside the body, any litter
dust inside the body will clump as well.
