Sounds to me like you are ready to make a trip to Lowe's or Home Depot.
My couch has short little legs about 2.5 inches long.  I got some half
inch wood, 1.75 inches wide, and cut it and screwed it to the legs so it
makes a sort of box under the couch and keeps the furkids out.  If your
legs are too long for that to work, get some window screen and staple it
to the bottom of the couch.

My gas heater sits in a cubbyhole.  I got some hardware cloth (in case
you don't know, that is a screen wire with holes 1/2 inch square in it)
and covered the entrance to the cubby.  In your case, it sounds like you'd
do better forming the hardware cloth into a cylendar around your heater.
You and they can see the heater and the heat can get out, but the fuzzys
can't get in.
