Hello Friends,
It has taken me a little while to be able to post this publicly on
the FML.

I began fostering an older ferret, Sunny, in early September. He was from
Rocky's Ferret Rescue & Shelter in Parkton, MD. Sunny was approximately 8
years old when he came home with me and he suffered from advanced adrenal
disease. Nevertheless, he'd prance and dance his bald butt all day long.
He played long and hard during each runtime, his energy was never ending.
He earned the nicknames Bald Monkey (for climbing the 5' cage) and Sir
Bald Butt (self explanatory).

When I brought Sunny home, I knew I was basically providing a home for him
to die in. I thought it would be a matter of months or years, never only
a matter of days and weeks. In early October, Sunny began some behaviors
such as straining to pee which were indicative of a prostrate problem. He
stayed at the shelter after Oktoberfest on October 6, and Barb (shelter
director) took him to the vet the following Wednesday. The vet performed
the necessary surgery, which we all thought Sunny could handle without
problem. Post-op, Sunny lost the spark he once had, he lost the will to
eat and to live. Sunny passed away peacefully on the evening of Saturday,
October 13 in Barb's loving arms.

Sunny left behind 6 brother and sister ferrets who loved him and miss him.
He is the first ferret I ever lost, so I hope he's able to find our puppy
George at the Rainbow Bridge. He was such a gentle dog, I'm sure he'll
be friends with Sunny until we meet again.

On a happier note... the day after Sunny died, several "oldsters" were
adopted from Rocky's. All affiliated with the shelter believe that
Sunny went to heaven and immediately sent angels down to oversee those
adoptions. Hardly anyone ever adopts an old, ill ferret, yet people like
Jen H. specifically wanted them during this time. Truly amazing.

If you have ever considered fostering an old or ill ferret for your local
shelter, stop hesitating and call them today. It is one of the most
rewarding experiences. Yes, your heart will ache at times, but it is very
fulfilling providing them the love they need during their final days.

Hugs,
Vicky
with the 3 Stooges Murphy, Potter, & Peyton and
the Sweet Sables Thomas, Glenda, & Buddy...
missing our little ray of Sunny
