Hi
Mary received an email from
http://www.petinsurance.com
stating that they now offer insurance for ferrets.
I went to their site to learn more about it. Apparently, they need to
be licensed on a state by state basis, so I wasn't able to find out
information about NY. I was able to find out some information about
Maryland.
Their rates are as follows:
For 1 ferret - $156.00 per year or $13.00 per month
For 2 ferrets (there is a discount) - $296.40 per year or $24.70 per month
However, there is a lot more to insurance than just the rates.
On the good side, they let you choose your own veterinarian. They seem to
be willing to allow you to add any of your ferrets to the plan.
On the bad side, there is a deductable per incident ($50). There are
limits to the "benefit allowance." And I'm not sure what ferret problems
are covered or not. And pre-existing conditions are not covered.
Depending on where you live and your veterinarian, these "benefit
allowances" may cover the cost of something like adrenal surgery or may
be inadequate.
You can go to their site, choose your state, and see what is available and
what it costs. It currently seems as though they are offering the ferret
insurance, but have not really added much documentation about it so far.
A lot of the information I found was for birds.
In general, for those of you who have been eagerly awaiting someone to
offer insurance for ferrets - here's a company that's doing it. It's now
up to you to weigh the pros and cons (if it is available in your state).
The value of insurance to you really depends on many factors including (but
not limited to) what you expect you medical bills to be, how much of your
veterinary bills the insurance would cover, how much the insurance itself
costs (this can really add up for families with a large number of ferrets),
and how much peace of mind the insurance would give you.
