Well my group are free roam and they are very active in climbing and
jumping from furniture to cages and back again They actually have several
periods of play times, early morning 4-8:30, early evening 6-8, and late
evening 10-12.  They sleep when they want and they play when they want, I
don't disturb them though they do disturb each other.  In this group there
are different types of body tones, ranging from very fit to rather obese
and everything in between.
 
From my observations, ferrets are individual and while one might be greatly
toned another with the same activity level may not.
 
I would think free roam ferrets would be more fit as they have the
opportunity to play and explore whenever they want.  Caged ferrets are
sometimes caged for days at a time or let out only for a couple hours a
day so how could they be more toned???  That doesn't seem logical to me.
