Lenny - there are very good reasons for starting a ferret club
and you don't necessarily need to do all the work yourself. The only
protection we have against unfair, anti-ferret legislation is
organizational. CLUBS = VOTERS. VOTERS = A SAY IN THE PROCESS.
I'm sure this isn't news to you . . . but in some regions of the
country, bizarre anti-ferret laws have been passed which could have
been prevented by a bit or organization.
Nancy Hartman, bless her heart, has been single minded about
starting the Delaware Valley Ferret Club. Her positive press exposure
wasn't accidental; dozens of press releases were sent out promoting
the DVFC. Many ferret owner names have been collected. The area the
DVFC is active in has a certain degree of protection against anti-
ferret legislation because of the organization which has occurred.
There has been a coordinated, publicly funded effort by the "public
health" officials of the State of California to have ferrets banned
as pets nationally. They sent out anti-ferret propaganda under the
guise of "public information." FURO and Bill Phillips have published
a rebuttal to this propaganda but each state in the US (and province
in Canada) needs a network of ferret owners. The information service
GEnie has a PET-NET forum which is adding a FERRET category. Each
club or would-be club should get signed up for GEnie so we have a
near instantaneous communication medium.
Please feel free to contact me for more information on starting a club,
signing up for GEnie or hooking up with a national organization.
And thanks, Chris Lewis, for providing this communication link.
