I too love Animal Planet and Emergency Vets is one of my favorites.
However, I believe Emergency Vets is filmed on locatation at Alameda East
Vet Hospital in California.  The location alone would explain why ferrets
are never shown as patients.  They may very well show up, but any concerned
CA ferret owner would probably not agree to let their footage be used for
fear of the legalization problem.
 
Just thought I would add my two bits.
