In Issue 36: Carafate is explained:

Subject: Re: mucous poop
XXXXX is correct - it is given by prescription only. It doesn't make a
lot of sense, as it is a completely inert drug, there is not chance of
inducing resistance to it, and people can't get high on it.
Carafate is also called Sucralfate, and if your vet doesn't stock it,
he/she can write a prescription at a local drug store.
Carafate essentially is a patch for ulcers. It should be given 10 minutes
prior to eating, so it can line all of the ulcers and prevent pain when
food hits the stomach and acid is released. While I have seen some vets
prescribe it every 4 to every eight hours, administering it between meals
really defeats its purpose.
The liquid formulation is pretty well tolerated by most ferrets, FAR better
than Pepto Bismol.
With kindest regards,
