Here's my step-by-step instructions for installing a carpet runner (wall
base really works) so that the ferrets will not dig up the carpet next to
the door.

1) Gather supplies.
2) Measure width of the doorway.
3) Retrieve tape measure from ferret's mouth.
4) Re-measure doorway.
5) Measure length of wall base for doorfacing.
6) Move ferrets out of way (you may have to repeat this step as many times
    as necessary).
7) Peel adhesive strip off of wall base so that it will stick to carpet.
8) Remove ferret's feet from sticky surface of wall base (imagine a small,
    furry snowboarder).
9) Lay down wall base and get roofing tacks as bottom side is no longer
sticky and is covered in fur.
10) Use hammer to lightly tap roofing tacks into surface of wall base to
    steady it.
11) Retrieve roofing tack or hammer from ferret's mouth.
12) Drive the roofing tacks into wall base (be careful not to hit ferret
toes, as they will be bouncing all around you (repeat this step as
many times as necessary for as long as it takes).

Be persistent and you will be successful. It really works!
