I knew a fert once who ate the "water saver" crystals that are sold as an
additive to potted plant soil.  The crystals look like rock salt and
hydrate to look like cubes of clear gelatin.  This little guy had a partial
obstruction that was difficult to detect as the substance doesn't show up
on xray...it was discovered when the vet finally did exploratory surgery in
a last ditch effort.  After the stuff was removed from his GI tract, the
ferret was fine.  He had apparently been digging in potted plants and
eating the rehydrated crystals.
