I am writing in defense of Randy, and those out there dedicating their time
to ferrets. I know that technically giving the vaccines, and then possibly
giving them the solumedrol, and other meds to counteract any reactions can
be "practicing vet. medicine"- If so, maybe the fact that I have given
my dogs their vaccines- at a cost of $4 per shot, instead of $45 the vet
charges- is also not legal. Also, cost aside, I am trained to do it on
humans, and can LEGALLY give shots to people. When I did this some vets
gave me a hard time, others, mostly those dealing with farmers, etc- had no
problem with it. How about all those people that are allowed to give the
subcutaneous fluid at home, the injections for renal disease, etc. The
breeders who dock the tails of their puppies, or give them the first set
of shots, etc... I am sure we can be of sound mind here and realize the
differences- and if someone just set up shop and started charging money-
it would be different.

I would also be upset if everyone decided to do this- it is a common
sense issue. If you had the knowledge, experience, and the backing of
local vets, with their 24 hour service available to you, you were willing
to be up any hour of the night, drive anywhere you needed to help others,
and spent all your free time and money helping ferrets- then why not be
left alone. If there were real problems- like many of the ferrets had
reactions, were found mistreated, etc then complain, but one complaint or
more could shut this person down- and a few hundred ferrets looking for a
home, help and love each year. Do you want to take them in?
