[log in to unmask][log in to unmask], 8 Oct 2000 23:00:57 -0400448_- Tornado and Hurricane were adopted out again. Poor kids, they've been to
the shelter 3 times in less than 2 months! Hopefully this home will be
their last! Sissy, after being at the shelter for months, was finally
adopted into a good home. i'm real happy for her.

We took in quite a few ferrets this week too. 2 from the Toronto Humane,
2 from Oakville H.S. and ose when she was younger. [...]42_1Sep200011:13:[log in to unmask] 0009 1893 32 13_Re: allergies13_Rebecca [log in to unmask], 1 Sep 2000 07:36:47 EDT614_- Check out my allergy page for answers to most of your questions....in
summary ... yes you can have A ferret (or two) without hurting your father
IF you follow strict precautions listed on my site.

Not listed are things like using an aircleaner. Not listed on there is
also how one thing can trigger sensitivity to other allergens that don't
normally bother you. So in short get a handle on everything else first.
Get a handle on dusting constantly, vacuuming with a dust free vacuum every
day, possibly using dust mite killer regularly on his bedroom carpet (where
ferrets won't [...]36_1Sep200007:36:[log in to unmask] 0009 1926 74 38_allergies, foods, genetics, Mike Janke14_Sukie [log in to unmask], 1 Sep 2000 14:16:27 -0400564_- Diane wrote:

If you are allergic to them I'm glad that it's controllable for this to be
an option; have known some people whose allergies got very out of control.
My allergist was more sensible and my allergies more amenable in part.
When he asked about pets I told him about the seven ferrets and added that
I'm not allergic to them, but I am allergic to my hubby's scalp (sort of)

Regarding the Colorado laws about the practice of veterinary medicine, what
seems to be missing are the paragraphs dealing with the self administration
of meds.

In most states, one can administer to their own livestock with no
penalties. It is when one starts to administer to livestock other than
their own that state laws are violated. [...]45_1Sep200009:47:[log in to unmask] 0009 2035 31 19_Re: giving vaccines12_steve [log in to unmask], 1 Sep 2000 11:40:59 -0400566_- I am writing in defense of Randy, and those out there dedicating their time
to ferrets. I know that technically giving the vaccines, and then possibly
giving them the solumedrol, and other meds to counteract any reactions can
be "practicing vet. medicine"- If so, maybe the fact that I have given
my dogs their vaccines- at a cost of $4 per shot, instead of $45 the vet
charges- is also not legal. Also, cost aside, I am trained to do it on
humans, and can LEGALLY give shots to people. When I did this some vets
gave me a hard [...]37_1Sep200011:40:[log in to unmask] 0009 2067 42 12_Vets; 8 in 19_Mal [log in to unmask], 1 Sep 2000 10:00:04 EDT448_- I just wanted to put in my own comment on veterinarians. Vets are fine,
noble people to devote their whole life and career to helping animals, but
the fact is is that they're basically DOCTORS.

Doctors, as we all know, are opinionated and have their OWN rules for
diagnosis and treatment. One vet may think that a certain measure is too
risky and unnecessary to be taken, while another may deem it vital and
important. [...]40_1Sep200010:00:[log in to unmask] 0009 2110 23 9_Re: foods13_Rebecca [log in to unmask], 1 Sep 2000 10:12:52 EDT620_- [log in to unmask] questioned watermelon for ferrets.

Now I can publicly *thank you* for taking in these three ferrets! For the
rest of you reading this, when I send an Emergency email post that states
"call me ASAP if willing to help", it means use the telephone, and not your
ISP connection...

Laurie forgot to mention in her post:
1. The overally long nails that needed to be trimmed.
2 One ferret seems to be growing in a toenail that was lost [torn].
3 No bedding in [rain soaked] cage.
4 The ferrets do seem to be underweight [dog food diet didn't help].
5 Lack of muscle tone [lack of exercise].

Parents are responsible for their children. Parents are responsible for
their children's pets. Pictures where taken in case Animal Control or
Police needed to be called in for a neglect case. [Remember my recent post
on three up for adoption in a criminal prosecution case in Wake County? -
Landlord turned owner in. Plead guilty. Anthony Strother(sp?), former pet
store employee!]

I have offered Laurie and SO hammocks/sleep sacks/Laxontone/vet check up,
etc. provided by Ferret Guardian Rescue Haven to get the kids comfy.

Thank you to the people that called or emailed me on offering to help in
this emergency foster and/or adoption situation.

I have spoken with the Aunt [Cathy] of the Nephew that was in possession of
the ferrets. Cathy was updated on the adoption event last night (Thur).
She wants to extend, through me, a great big Thank You! to ferret lovers.
Cathy is not a ferret owner, but an animal lover. Last weekend visiting
her brother, she realized the ferrets were not being treated right [caged
outdoors and fed dog food], and contacted me at 7:15am on Weds a.m. [I
am NOT a morning person. Do NOT call me at this hour unless it is an
emergency - leave message twice, as the first one, I will ignore.]

FMLers -any experience on prosecuting neglect/abuse cases?

Thanks, Shari
