If you have a good working relationship with your vet, you should be able
to purchase a bottle of the hormone and give the shots yourself or ask
to have the vet or vet tech do it.  The reason the hormone shots are so
expensive for just one is that the hormone comes unmixed and once the
bottle is mixed you (and/or the vet) have a short window in which to
dispense it.  One bottle can be used for several heating jills.  It's
best to wait until the jill has been in heat for at least 10 days in
order for the hormone to be the most effective.  If given too early, a
second shot could be required to bring the jill out.
