For the Diggers out there:
Get one of the clear storage containers with lids...you know, the big
ones....fill with 5lb of whole long grain rice (DO NOT USE INSTANT).  Down
here we can get it in 5lb bags.  Cut a hole in the lid of the container
just big enough for the ferret to climb through (variation, put one of
those dryer like tubes in the hole for them to climb in)
 
they love it....might see rice in poop until they learn to keep their
mouths closed while doing shovel ferret
 
The instant rice is what is dangerous it can swell up in their stomachs.
 
Also, can place container in another tub so when they climb in and out,
rice stays in the bottom then you can dump it back in.
 
Have also heard of some the use the Pea Gravel like for gardens.  Well
washed.  Advantage, when gets dirty w/hair and such, just spread out wash
down let dry and put back in.
