Little ones sometimes make a sobbing honk for all the world like a little
goose--years ago, I remember sitting up with a new lonely baby (8 weeks
old) ferret who missed his mother and litter mates. He bonded to us and
to a stuffed squirrel puppet and I never heard him honk again.
Older ones may sigh, or look very, very sad, and if they are having bad
dreams, they will whimper in their sleep--heart-rending little whimpers
that make you cuddle them close and tell them that they are safe and warm
and loved and you are so happy they are here with you.
(sometimes I wish they could talk and tell us about it--and then I think,
it would probably make us cry too)
Kate, Monty and Madison (who are all getting fatter for winter--and
the guys are getting nice thick fur, too, with lots of pretty silver
highlights. Me, I just have the gray highlights and the extra pounds!)
