I think you've got it a little mixed up.  Flus and colds are BOTH viruses.
The Flu generally inflames the membranes that line the respiratory tract
(that causes a running nose, scratchy throat, and congestion that causes
coughing).  Fever may or may not be present.  Symptoms such as aching
joints, appetite loss, and lethargy (and of course the cough that I
mentioned earlier) may occur.  Even when the symptoms clear up (usually
in 10 days) a person (or I assume even a ferret) may feel weak for some
time.  Relapses may occur due to lowered resistance and resuming your
activities too soon.  Treatment for the Flu (in humans) usually include bed
rest, aspirin (or Tylenol), lots of fluids, and as much sleep as possible.
However, if the patient is more vulnerable to complications (people that
are over 65, diabetics, very young children, or anyone with heart, lung.
or kidney disorders) then an antibiotic may be prescribed.
 
Colds on the other hand should NOT be treated with antibiotics as this may
cause changes in normal bacteria.  People usually go about their business
with a cold, because it generally only lasts 3-4 days.  Symptoms (in
combination) such as: stuffed or running nose, mild scratchy throat, teary
eyes, heavy breathing, sneezing fits, mild headache, impairment of taste
or smell, and a general feeling laziness.  Some people choose to use
antihistamines to unclog nostrils and relieve dry eyes.
 
Hope this has given you a better idea of what to expect with colds and the
Flu.  Should your ferrets get either I suggest taking them to the vet.
