Hi everyone,
As I promised here is a quick update on Sammy.
Two weeks-ago he had routine blood work done which revealed elevated PCV
70% (nrml 50-55% [however, ferrets can have a PCV of 65% and be nrml as
long as no other abrnml values indicate dehydration]) Albumin 52 g/l (nrml
26-38) Creatinine 97 umol/l (nrml 35-80) Globulin 17 g/l (nrml 18-31).
For the next three days I gave him 50- 60 cc of water daily and we repeated
the PCV it was 72%.
At this point the vet did research and consulted with colleagues.
Diagnosis was Polycythemia Vera essential or secondary to a cancer.
Advised a full set of x-rays and repeat PCV , if any higher phlebotomy
( blood letting) of 10% of blood volume immediately and repeated every
seven days.
So... this is what we did. X-rays showed no signs of cancer (thank god) ,
palpated his abdomen: normal, PCV 61%? Needless to say I'm thrilled!
I'm bringing him back for a repeat PCV in two-weeks. However, the vet
finds this even stranger now.
Sonya, sorry about your little girl. I may have some info for you please
give me you email or fax address.
Our best to all of you and your beasties.
Dona & Sampson
