I've had mice before, and ferrets.
 
I used to live in an old basement apartment, and one day I realized that I
had mice.  But because I had so securely ferret-proofed the place, the mice
were never actually able to get out into the apartment itself!  Instead,
they were restricted to the kitchen cabinets & drawers (yuck!).  I found
that the best thing to get rid of the mice was mousetraps.  The
old-fashioned kind.  The best bait is a raisin -- you can hook it on firmly
so that the mouse really has to tug on it.  That way, it's very quick.  The
best place to put the baited trap is on your stove when you go to sleep
(and your ferrets are caged).
 
And for those of you who think this is cruel -- I've seen mice done in by
poison, and the snap-traps are *much* quicker.  I also think they're more
humane than those stupid glue traps. I mean, do you want to face a live
mouse in a glue trap first thing in the morning?  What the heck are you
going to do with it?
