I'd like to thank everyone that replied to my post last week. Tuesday
night I took her back to the vet. They had called a vet in N.H. that
specializes in only ferrets and he gave them a whole list of things to
do and questions to ask me. He wanted to keep her there to rehydrate
her and start new meds but he decided not to when he found out how far
away I lived.... right now I wish that he had kept her.
The vet put her and Shirley on biaxin (2x a day), amoxicillin (2x a day),
sucralfate (4x a day) and pepto for Laverne only (3x a day). I can no
longer take the girls to my classroom because it might be the stress of it
that is causing her trouble (??) Shirley was put on the meds even though
she doesn't have any symptoms... I'm not sure why... maybe she could be a
carrier of the bacteria.. who knows?
Laverne is still not eating on her own. I've been giving her duck soup but
she doesn't eat much of it. She drinks quite a bit but not enough. I give
her pedialyte and take her to the sink every time I see her moving around.
I should have left her there or he should have at least given her some sub
q fluids... she is so weak! I just hope she can bounce back from this
enough to let the meds work for her. She is getting sick of being messed
with everytime she wakes up.... either getting meds, force feedings or
drinks! But I've got to do it to keep her going. Poor girl! If she
doesn't start responding soon, I'll be taking her to a local vet and
getting some fluids for her. Maybe if she gets that boost, she'll start
getting some strength back.
Once again, Many thanks to everyone for their responses and support for
Laverne and myself. We'll get through this! She is a fighter!
