I don't know the effects of lead on ferrets, but I do know it affects
humans in adverse ways.  The AMA (American Medical Association) did a
study on candles and found that certain candles, when burned in a room,
release unacceptable levels of lead into the air.  This was paraphrased
by my mom, I need to get the full article so I can give better details.
 
The candles to blame are ones that have metal wire in the wick.  You can
take precautions by inspecting the candle wick and do not burn them if the
wire is present.  It will look like a normal wick, but you will see its
center is metal.  Typically, the wire wick is used in scented candles.  I
was shocked because I like to burn candles (and mine had wire in the
wick!!!)  The report claimed burning them can release toxic levels of lead.
 
I can only imagine lead will affect ferrets too.  Is this true?  Are
ferrets affected by lead like humans are?  I know this could be a danger
to human babies as well.
 
I will try to hunt down the article on the Internet, my mom has the printed
version that I will need to get from her in the meantime.
