Can I just tell you all how grateful I am that I've been reading the FML
for the past months and the things I've learned from you all?
I took my babies in for their rabies shots about 3 weeks ago, and then
brought them in yesterday for their distemper. While I was in the vet's
office, I was thinking about what a pain it was to make 2 trips to the
vet's and time off work and too hot outside to carry the carrier, and next
year I'd prolly just get both shots at the same time, etc. Well, all four
got their shots just fine, and I was out front writing out my check when I
heard a strange noise come from the carrier. I looked inside and someone
had been vomiting. Oy! I thought, and quickly informed the assistant and
went digging around to see who was having the problem. It was Pica who
was puking, and while getting her out of the cage, I noticed that
Buttercup seemed almost comatose she was so still.
So the vet and the assistant took both of them to the back room to deal
with them. They both got shots and Butter went on oxygen ("she was
turning a little blue" the vet told me later) and Pica had to be switched
to three different cages with all the puking she was doing. After an hour
they were returned to me (Boobah and Flower spent the hour being very
bored in the pet carrier) and we went home.
So now I know: neither Buttercup nor Pica get more distemper shots. I'm
curious, though, as to why two of them should suddenly have extreme
reactions to their distemper shots at the same time--once I got home, even
Boobah threw up a little bit, so I'm not sure if I should keep her from
the distemper shots as well. This is the first time I've given them their
shots from this vet (who is an exotic specialist and a STAR vet), could it
be just the serum he uses that they reacted so badly to? I'd appreciate
it if anyone has any ideas about this.
Also, prayers to the cute little DEW I saw at the vet's clinic: Odie had
pancreatic cancer and his mommy was taking him to be put to sleep. But at
least now he gets to play with his friend Buger, who passed to the Rainbow
Bridge before him.
