Greeting Folks,
Tonight I saw something I had never seen before, a semi nude ferret (no no
that), but she was red in spots that kind of looks like a diaper rash.  Her
skin was extremely dry, flaking off dry.  She has fur on her pretty little
face, but the skin underneath was red.
 
Her owner said the loss of fur took a matter of days.  She is alert,
energetic, eats well, but naked and red.
 
Her cage mate is also showing signs, but his coat is very oily, almost like
a hob in full rut (both are about 4 and MF), his skin is dry, but he also
has a reddish flaky layer of oil under the coat that seems to be killing
the fur off by blocking the pores.
 
Her vet put the female under a "black light" and she said there were a
couple of spots that showed green.  The vet thinks fungus, but can't tell
what type, and eliminated the possibility of mites.
 
My vet says it is extremely rare that a ferret kept indoors would come down
with a fungus, and ring worm is just as rare.
 
She has them on a spray, and an antihistamine, along with an antibiotic.
 
Has any vets out there seen anything like this, her vet is looking to
consult with someone on it.
 
Has anyone had experience with this type of thing, what did you do to clear
it up?
 
Thanks folks, and and all info will be greatly appreciated.  The little
female ferret looks so pitiful you want to cry, and her mom is worried sick
about her, she showed me the vet bills just so I knew she wasn't bluffing
about taking her to the vet allot over this, she has spent over $550 on
this.
 
Her vet wants her to go to the vet from the Akron Zoo, a "specialist".
