The three I noticed as a possible clump have all ALWAYS had light coats with grey instead of black, and tan or tan and blonde instead of brown. These were nt older age alterations.
I would love to hear not only if others have noticed ones with this type of coat but also definitely about ones with other types of coats. Have to try to not skew replies!
By that I mean ones whose coats have grey instead of black, or tan or golden instead of brown.
Of the four we have had through the years with seasonal allergies, three had dilute coats (The other was a dark silvermitt with multiple serious deformations.). We have had few dilute coat ferrets in our three decades (something like 32 or 33 years) with ferrets in the family, maybe a half dozen or maybe slightly more so close to half the dilute coat ferrets we have had have developed seasonal allergies but almost none of the rest.
I didn't have a haunted scoozie, but I did have a little plastic Garfield ball that would talk when you bounced it. It started randomly talking when no one was near it. And one of my friends had a chick that peeped when you touched the 2 sensors, it started peeping on its own, too. We would all be in the living room, and it would start peeping in the bedroom...freaked us out!
Yes, Carol, I have one too. Got it over 10 years ago, I think, when they were new. Never changed the batteries, and it does occasionally talk, chatter, growl, purr(?). I've told my other half just to ignore it. Scared the bejeebus outta him the first time it went off outta the blue. (Mwuahahaha. :::evil cackle:::)
Sebastien, age approx 5. Been large and healthy since I got him from my vet about 3 years ago (he was my vet's son's ferret who left him with Dad before going off to college). We've always called him Sebastien Von Winkle since he sleeps hard, routinely does the 'SND' trick on us. Very laid back, mellow easy-going guy who normally plays hard and sleeps hard.
In which your vote can signal to the veterinary and veterinary research communities that ferrets count and the vets who advance their medical care count by voting for Dr. Robert Wagner.
This is an FML topic, but is a non-standard post that is a borderline post for the FHL. (Having had the FHL server apparently lose my first query on this topic I do not yet know if it will be accepted or rejected. Guess I will find out.) Personally, I think that anything that emphasizes the importance of ferret veterinary research to the greater veterinary community can be
I scored a Scoozie ferret at a yard sale, replaced the batteries and have it sitting on a cabinet. Supposedly you push the button and it talks, chirps, chatters. Recently it is just talking by itself with no reason to, when I am in another room or near it. It is just kind of freaky. I wonder if anyone else has one and does it do the same thing?
There are only a few more days to go vote. Voting takes place through September 1. So, please visit and vote: <http://www.americasfavoriteveterinarian.org/index.php?src=forms&id=Vote+2014&voteID=Wagner>
If Dr. Wagner wins he would be in the spotlight for an entire year and the prize money could help with his adrenal research. Wouldn't it be great to have an adrenal vaccine?
Sadly, on top of Xena's problems (IBD, adrenal disease and insulinoma), I just found out that Spooky has insulinoma too.
Re Carafate: Does anyone know definitively what carafate is for and when to administer it? My vet finally gave me some. I had complained some time ago that the omeprazole he had given me to protect Xena's stomach made her sick (though he doesn't believe it was from that med).
I brought him to the vet yesterday and the vet concluded he has ECE and he is now on two different medication for the next 10 days and he has another appointment on September 9th for a follow up. I mentioned to the vet about the thin poop and he said it is probably the corn meal in his kibble. When I got him he was already eating Marshalls kibble and I've been holding off on switching his kibble for until after he is doing better.
Reminder that the deadline for registration for the Midwest Ferret Fellowship Faire 2014 (Michigan show) is *September 1, 2014*. Fast approaching! Actual show date is September 20, 2014 taking place at Whiskers University in Grand Rapids, MI.
This is an American Ferret Association sanctioned ferret show hosted by the Midwest Ferret Fellowship as a fundraiser to promote responsible pet ownership, awareness and education. Proceeds also support the West Michigan Ferret Connection, a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity that houses and maintains surrendered ferrets until they find a "forever home". Registration packet and show information can be found at: http://www.midwestferretfellowship.org/events.html
One of my favorite movies with our fur kids in it is Furry Vengeance with Brandan Fraser and how the animals get together to stop him and his company from cutting down their forest! It is so funny and the ferret is so very cute, I also love Beast Master.
One day the hubs decided he was only going to cut up half of the rather sizable watermelon up. The other half he covered in saran wrap and put on the kitchen table.
A few hours later I walk into the kitchen to find watermelon bits flung about the table, on the floor, and into the cats' bowl - oh the look on their faces was priceless! The juice was running everywhere. It was a widespread, sticky mess.
>She'd dug out a pretty sizable hole right smack in the middle of the >melon.
Oh... my God!!!! LOL. That was one of the most hilarious ferret stories I've ever heard. And as a writer for Ferrets Mag, etc, for more than a dozen years, I've heard... a LOT. This rivals the ferret that grabbed a breast implant and ran around the house.
Barbara Wiborg wrote about seeing "The Big Lewbowski." I had heard of it but never saw it; there are many movies I would like to see but my husband doesn't so time goes by and maybe I'll catch it on TV or rent. Well, last fall our art house theater was showing the Big Lewbowski for one night. I took myself. There were many men dressed down in costume. I had no idea why but it didn't take long to see why. But as soon as the movie started with the voiceover about The Dude I knew why I have
June 14th, 2000 10 p.m. That's the day my life changed in ways I never dreamed of!
My 30 lb. cat Kia was in the back yard staggering around like he was very drunk, and it scared me..I thought he might be having a stroke. When I reached him I realized he was just following an adorable little black ferret who was trying to sniff everything in sight. I'd never been near a ferret but I was pretty sure that was what he was.
Over the years, I have seen posts asking for a the referral of a good Veterinarian in the Asheville/Western N.C. area and have seen the name Lee Bolt of Sweeten Creek Vet Hospital come up repeatedly. I live an hour and half (one way) from Asheville so my local vet has been my go-to guy for years for general check-ups, implants, etc. When my 4-year-old Sassy started developing an enlarged spleen this Spring, he was okay with doing X-rays and an ultrasound but didn't think there was any more he could do. Over 4 months, Sassy gained a full pound
Need help trying to get two ferrets from Savannah, Georgia to the Metro Atlanta area asap. The ferrets are three and eight years old. They are not getting out of the cage at all, have lost a lot of weight and both have adrenal disease. The woman has, "been waiting for the old one to die so she can find a home for the younger one easier." I have a home lined up for them in Dalton, Georgia. This person can drive as far as McDonough, which is about two hours for her. If anyone can help, please send me
Just last week I was reminded of a movie with a ferret part in it. And well done.
Starship Troopers. The scene is with Neil Patrick Harris who is teaching a soldier about reading minds and sending images to other's minds. His ferret, a sable, comes through a set of tubes to Neil's desk. He chats with the ferret the tells him to go upstairs. The ferret makes dooking noises and runs off screen. You hear Neil's mom yelling and the soldier asks what he did. Neil states he sent an image of a grub under his mom's dress to

QUOTE Wolverines are not threatened by climate change and don't need protection under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) announced yesterday. After more than a year of analysis, the agency is citing scientific uncertainty in withdrawing its controversial proposal to list the snow-dwelling carnivores as threatened. But some conservation scientists are concerned that the agency's reversal sets a precedent that will restrict using models of future climate in listing decisions. END QUOTE
I have seen many ferret movies, starting with Beastmaster, Starship Troopers, Along Came Polly, etc. Ny favorite is Golden Compass. The children have animals they trained to help them. Truely worth watching & purchasing.
The best has to be "The Beastmaster", hands down. I can't really say the worst because I haven't seen a lot of bad ones, but I heard some negative reviews about "Polly" and some of the scenes on it.
I have really enjoyed reading the FML for the past few weeks. I am embarrassed to say I just discovered you, even with being a ferret lover for quite a few years.
My first ferret came to me over 20 years ago when my boyfriend at the time brought Figment home to me as a birthday present. I took one look at her, she was just a tiny little thing, and immediately thought what the heck is this cute adorable creature. I knew absolutely nothing about how to care for a ferret. I searched every bookstore for anything ferret
Long before the furless ferret was born (otherwise known as our male offspring), we moved into a very yuppie kind of neighbourhood in a nice part of the area just at the edge of the housing. A mere 1/2 block away was wide open fields and woods, part of a major river valley. In a couple of years we had become the proud owners of at least 2, maybe even all 3 of the ferrets. And to show our animal favs, we got the vanity license plates, FERET1 and FERET2 for our cars. So though we only knew our immediate
Mocha was the second ferret and she had a "houdini" attitude. If there was some place that she had even been given a peak at, she would move heaven and earth and through walls to get there again. Escape was her middle name.
The ferret zone was the basement in the original house as it was easiest to ferret proof and had a door at the top of the stairs to keep the more open concept upper 2 floors inaccessible. And even smarter or so we thought, we installed a heavy duty door closer (one of the stronger models -
Good morning everyone, I dont often post, but read every issue.
This time I have a request: does anyone in the tri-state area (PA, NY, NJ) Have room for, or can network to re-home 2 healthy 3 year olds? The owner is willing to drive an hour from Edison New Jersey.
If you or someone wanting to give these kids a forever home is willing to drive, perhaps we can set something up further.
Are you serious? We will all be on here for a year answering this one. lol. Makes me want to break it up into catagories one by one liiiiiiiiiiike, funniest thing your ferret ever did with food, or funniest thing you ferret ever did when a guest was over, or funniest thing your ferret ever stole. lol.
Oddly the one I liked most, ended up to leave a really dark shadow over "ferretdom". I loved Along Came Polly. It was the first time I saw a ferret in a movie where it was totally up to date on how a ferret should be raised. Icing on the cake was it "kind of" a rescue too. The ferret was aloud full roam of the house, it went out on walks on leash with her through the city too. It was so cool. And she acted like it was SO normal and like everyone else wasn't for not thinking
Randy has been in Toronto General Hospital quite a bit. I heard from her a while back and she told me what unit she was in. I am uncertain if she is still there, but I have the general mailing address.
Times have been tough for her and I am sure she would love to get a cheerful note from all of us. Please, drop a note or card to Randy. You can send it care of:

I have a ferret (Roxy) who is 7 years old and she has a black tooth and bad breath. The discolored tooth is one of her fangs and it has been black for at least two years. I noticed the bad breath a few months ago. The gum isn't inflamed and she never paws at her mouth or acts like it bothers her. She eats soft treats and she gets gravy. I never see her eating kibble, but she doesn't have to. In case it matters, she is adrenal and has had two des implants so far. My questions are
My turn. We lived in southern Wisconsin at the time. I had seen the occasional ferret with other owners while at the vet's with my cats. Nice, I thought. Then my oldest son's then- wife came home with one tiny white girl that she got from someone taking it in the humane society in Milwaukee where they lived. She was taking in a cat because they were not supposed to have pets in their apartment. She had known ferrets before they met so was happy to take her in and give it a home. At first they made a tiny
Several of you were upset to learn that Ferret.com will no longer be selling Totally Ferret.
You can order TF directly from Liz Lovins at Performance Foods by calling (877) 545-5462.
The TF varieties have been a major part of our mix for years. (Mostly the turkey venison & Active.) More than 3/4 of our 100 ferrets are over the age of five -- and still going strong. (Many are nine & ten years old!)
I'm babysitting Mom's Blue Front Amazon parrot, Reggie. Now Reg is 30+ years old and has been around ferrets for years.
My 3 ferrets, however, have never to my knowledge met a bird.
The day Reggie arrived I found a safe spot for her travel cage the kitchen. It gave her a good view of the comings and goings of the humans and cats. Like many houses, the kitchen at our place is the hub.
I forget how this game is going? We did how we first got our ferrets, and licence plates. Whats next? Was someone specific supposed to call one out? This has been great

Well, I suggested book and movies that feature ferrets. Both the ones that you love the best or the ones that annoy you the most with their presentation and attitude to ferrets.
Or how about the funniest thing that any of your ferrets ever did. You know the incident when the house was left in shambles but it left you in hysterical laughter and giggles.
Millie, you can just call Performance Foods and order TF. As a shelter you have to fill out some information about your organization. Then when you order (Liz always answers the phone) your product is soon on its way direct to your door. Currently the cost of the shelter bag, 50 pounds, is $108, turkey, 30 pounds, $75, Complete, 30 pounds, $59. There certainly was a supply problem with the turkey last spring. It was a packaging problem. Once that was solved my order came right away. They close at noon on Friday, Colorado time.

I just received an email from Ferret.com they won't be carrying TF due to supply issues.
Where can we get it? anyone know? We are rescue and the majority of our mix is the Active AND the Venison - our ferrets come out of their problems so much faster on it than other foods. I know a lot are trying out all these new foods coming out that are supposed to be better BUT old tried and true works here - those others are having diarrhea (the ferrets) issues and such and we sure don't want to tangle with that
Thank you all so much for your help and advice! I've received tons of responses anywhere from he's perfectly fine to it's a dire emergency so to be on the safe side I arranged the soonest available appointment for him (Which is Wednesday the 27th) and I'll be sure to post another update when I find out what's wrong and if his condition worsens or gets better. I just hope his condition doesn't worsen between now and then. Again, thank you everyone so much for your helpful advice! :)
Coccidia is another thing that pops up in times in ferrets. The trick with that is that two vastly different SIZES have to be looked for, and sometimes labs or vets only check with one magnification. Eimeria and Isospora are the two genera the vet has to be sure are checked for. Not all vets or labs know that ferrets get both, so mention both by name, please.
The mist was rising up off of the meadow when The Receiving Angel arrived at his station. He was very tired and did not sleep well last night. He was apt to worry that the new arrivals to the Bridge might not settle in well. Sometimes he just stared at the cloud cover and worried. While he was sitting there mulling over the latest arrivals, a young ferret wandered up the path to the gate.
I think I have posted about choking ferrets before. Today I was reminded yet again about the importance of knowing what to do if your ferret is choking.
Today our youngest ferret presented with what seemed like a vomiting episode. As I was watching her close (as I always do if I hear vomiting) I noticed she was starting to wheeze and look faint in between retching.
I just jumped on the bandwagon and opened my big trap. SHARON figured this all out and nominated Dr. Wagner, and BARB created his website! They did all the work, not me. I just admire what they accomplished and desire success!
The young ones sometimes ingest things like artificial cloth fibers, fake sheep fleece, latex, rubber and other items that will not digest and will block. If it becomes a full blockage (which can also increase the toxin load in the blood stream) or if it perforates then it IS an emergency.
I hope that you already have a vet who is familiar with ferrets and have been having the needed kit appointments.
It sounds like ferret enteric coronavirus, ECE, but it COULD be salmonella from the chicken along with it. Ferrets with ECE are very susceptible to acquiring additional GI illnesses, and that combination can prove fatal for some. Ferrets do not normally get salmonella as easily as humans, but when compromised they do, and salmonella is every bit as dangerous an illness for them as for us. They also are just as susceptible as we are to a range of other food-borne illnesses, some nastier.
Our veterinarian's birthday is next week. For several years now I've posted his birthday on the FML and he gets a kick out of the cards and pictures and notes he receives. It makes his birthday special. If anyone would like to send him a bd card he would be tickled! He likes seeing ferret pictures so if you can, include one in his card. :-)
I had a call tonight from a young lady, (16) who has a 1 year old ferret and wanted to get it a companion so it wouldn't be lonely while she is at school. She though because the second ferret was with other ferrets that she could just put them together. It didn't work that way, of course, and she had no place to keep the new ferret who is a couple years old, got it from some local pet store. The new ferret was biting the carrier she had to put it in; it was the only thing available.
I just recently got a ferret. He just turned 4 months old and ever since I got him I noticed something very very odd. One day I noticed a poop in his litter box that looked just like an egg yolk. I freaked out and when I was scooping it out I noticed a little red dot in it. Since then I've never seen that kind of poop from him again but I do find occasionally (At least 1-2 times a week) a poop that is dark green, slimy, and snot like in the litter box (Looks like a loogie
The FML was my lifeline when we got our first ferret. Lillian developed adrenal disease and lost her fur. My vet at the time told me she should be euthanized immediately and if not would die painfully within six months. I called my son in tears and told him. He said hold on he'd do some research. He found the FML with its wealth of knowledgeable helpful people. Thanks to the group I found a vet, he did surgery and Lily had five more good years. It's so nice to see the list still hanging in there ready to help
June 1991, my son had always wanted a ferret but I refused. I believed the horror stories I'd heard and was afraid it would kill my cat. Mike was getting ready for college when he came home from shopping carrying a small box with airholes. Inside was this tiny sable ferret and thus ferrets entered our household. He got her as a dorm pet and asked if she could stay until college started. He named her Lillian Marie since he said she was such a perfect lady. He soon realized she would not be safe in a dorm room but

A guy found a ferret lost in a park, I think it was Grammercy park. He posted the ferret for free on Craigslist with a picture of a tiny albino. I sent him an email since he gave no phone number. All of the inquiries about the ferret went to his spam mail, so he took the ferret and turned it over To AC & C on 8/4 at 5:30 pm.
My first ferret came to me by the way of my daughter. A boy that she knew from school needed money for the prom, so he had decided to sell his ferret. I had never seen a ferret. I didn't even know what a ferret was, but I was soon to find out. She bought him for $50.00. His name was Rocky. When Rocky arrived he was in what looked to me like a pine coffin. The box was about 4 foot long, maybe two foot wide. and the top of the box had a small opening with a wire
When it came time to renew a few years ago I decided it was time to get a personalized license plate for the truck I was driving so I got FZYLDY. The truck is no longer running and will be sold so I kept the plate. The new SUV is too nice to put decals and stickers all over but I do have some ovals ferret stickers stuck onto magnetic sheets that are on the rear gate. (AFA, I Love My Ferrets and Legalize Ferrets) That way they don't sully the car and are easily removed if needed.
Hey All, I have had two vanity tags. The first was Fer-8 And the last one was scruff-u.
My first ferret was a tiny dark sable kit named Jubilee. God how I loved her. Everything about her delighted me. Next came RinkyDink. And then there was BigFun, Frolic, Noble, Blaze, Pepsi, Sassyfrassy, Sterling, Lolly, BlackBerry, LunaMoon, Rosie and Moon. Rosie was the last to pass, in the beginning of the year. And so ended 20 years of ferrets.
I don't have one now, but I did for a great many years. Well, not a personalized licence plate, but a nifty license plate frame. It had paw prints all over it, and ........ something about ferrets on it that I can't remember. It came from the original Ferret Store. :)

When I moved here to North Carolina, someone called ferrets Fur Piggies, which I loved!
I had a license plate added to my car that also has a hammock in the rear window, held in place with suction cups on the rear windshield, and a stuffed, very realistic looking ferret in the hammock. On the side window is a bumper sticker I made that read: "My Ferret is Smarter than Your Honor Student"

She asked me to let you know that, those of you who helped the family with the 3-legged cat and the husband who lost his leg in a car accident, your assistance is VERY MUCH APPRECIATE by the family.
My CR-V, which is what is use for day to day stuff, has the VA plate "FER8 MOM". I also have a mini-van that I use for going to show, and taking multiple ferrets to the vet. My van's plate is "SHO FER8". Ferret people always know what the plates mean, but I get many questions about the meanings from people who are not familiar with ferrets.
My plate says "FERRET7" in honor of my seven little furry angels, Kitsooni, Imagination, Isabelle, Soda Pop, Yuki Des, The Cowboy Kid, and Porridge.....I miss them so profoundly...,
I, too, have personal license plates on my SUV....I have (in OHIO) the plate "FERRET1".....FERRET and FERRETS were already taken at the time.... I love checking out all of the license plates on cars every year when I go to the Buckeye Bash ferret show in Columbus! I usually drive around and take pics of the different license plates and also the decals & stickers on a lot of the cars.
The rescue that I volunteer with had previously had a float made with a giant ferret that sits on a wagon and is pushed by volunteers. We had used this float in the Calgary Stampede Parade but are no longer in a position to continue storing it. I am just wondering if anyone out there would have use for this as we are trying to find it a new home rather than having to throw it out. It would be free to whoever wants it, but you must be able to either come and pick it up or
Here is some of what Sharon wrote when nominating him:
"...over 30 years experience ...amazing list of Abstracts/Publications to his credit. ...spoken at ferret conferences... veterinarian for the Hide-E-Hole Ferret Rescue ... involved with the Three Rivers Ferret Council... holds joint positions at the University of Pittsburgh"
I saw my first vanity plate on a Blue van going the opposite way from me. back in maybe '07 with NY tags "WEAZLEQUEEN" if i remember correctly. I inquired among ferret folks, but nobody knew this person. Eventually I got for myself "FERTMOM"
Several years ago I was driving along when I noticed the car next to me had plates that read "Fert Doc". I tried beeping my horn and waving to get the drivers attention - but he sped off. I followed him for miles - he'd speed up, I'd speed up. I was so excited! A ferret vet! Finally we came to a stop light; I jumped out of my car, raced up to his drivers window, which he hurriedly rolled up - I grinned and asked if he was a ferret veterinarian - he glared at me and said "I
We have two mini-vans and one car. My van plates read M FURO; our car plates read TERREF (read in the rear view mirror as FERRET) because that was already taken; Candi's van plates read FERRETS (one of the first seven digit plates issued in Texas). Leaves very little doubt as to our favorite pets.
My first ferret: 1993 I grew up in California (70s and 80s) and from the time I can remember, I loved animals and petstores! I would spend hours in the petstore! For years and years, I had pet rats. I had a snake and I had a wild kangaroo rat that I captured myself in Nebraska. I saved baby birds and hurt pigeons. I left food out for the raccoons. I grew up in a family that always had dogs and cats. But.....I never had a ferret. I had never even seen a ferret.
There are only about two more weeks during which you can demonstrate how important ferret veterinary care and advances are while honoring a man who has done so very much for ferrets, Dr. Robert Wagner.

Abstract Vertebral column pathologies requiring surgical intervention have been described in pet ferrets, however little information is available on the normal vertebral formula and congenital variants in this species. The purpose of this retrospective study was to describe vertebral formulas and prevalence of congenital vertebral anomalies in a sample of pet ferrets. Radiographs of 172 pet ferrets (96 males and 76 females) were included in this retrospective

Seeing Pat's post made me wonder what mustelid license plates people have had.
Years ago we found every configuration on ferret that we wanted in NJ was taken, but we were able to get WEASL 1.
Ferret people understood.
Almost everyone else asked us if we were lawyers. (The exception was a dentist who wanted to know if people ever asked us if we were dentists. The man had a guilty conscience; his partner was great but things came out later about this one.)
Most of the commenting public wanted it and told the government that during the long haul to change the regulations. Heck, even MF's management at that time wanted it, though one of their vets spoke against it and at least two mid-sized ferret farms objected to it.
On learning more the experts at the USDA wanted it, too. There were so many studies of so many types presented to them. I know because I was in the core group and helped find and collect those.
In December of 1994 me and my husband to be talked about getting a pet. He wanted a snake - I wanted a cat. Well that went nowhere until I read a article in the news paper about ferrets becoming legal in Michigan. I asked him what he thought about a ferret and had him read the article . We got our First ferret Katie Ruth February 18th 1995. She changed our whole world!!!! Of course 4 months later Katie need a cage mate. So back we went to find her a brother or sister. Sebastian Alec became her new
I blame the subversive movies. You know the ones, those movies that sneak in a tiny cute little furry creature into the plot and let the creature steal your heart away. It may be a not-so-great movie but you will watch it over and over and pause and replay the ferret bits. Tell me that you haven't done that ?
1999. Went into a pet store for fish food. There was an aquarium - type container with one lonely, but beautiful, panda female kit for sale. I had had virtually NO experience or knowledge of these special creatures that God created just for us to love and to laugh over.
I had had a glimpse of one about 7 years earlier, a friend of a friend, and that ferret was curled up in a dark corner, not really an encounter. Never even got a good look at it. I was clueless.

Although Bill did not create the FML... (That was Chris Lewis with Pat Paley doing more than I had realized at the time.) Bill HAS moderated the FML for the vast majority of its lifetime. How long have you been doing this to help others, Bill? I think it must be something like twenty years or more, right? Did your 20th anniversary go past w us missing it? I hope not! (Yippee! I found the answer and it is later in this post.)
If we could get BIG to tell us all his story about getting involved with ferrets.....and then how he came to be the Oz of the FML? I'd like to hear his unique story.
[Moderator's note: The short answer is I've always thought the furry little critters were really cool looking! But, as a child, my family really were not animal lovers and I had no pets.
I asked a few ferret vet experts if what was seen in this person might also happen in ferrets and learned that Dr. Robert Wagner has encountered some ferrets whose low blood sugar responded to GnRH agonists.
Here is what i had asked them: Is there a chance that any of the male ferrets w adrenal disease and related prostatic disease who appear to also have insulinoma might instead have a process like this?
Today I received a note of appreciation from a person who thanked me for helping to arrange for the re-homing of her two very handsome ferrets. I am not sure why it happened but so many of those wonderful DMK ferrets came to mind and the life changing experience involvement in he Ohio Rescue provided. My relationship with ferrets in particlar and members of the ferret community was forever changed.
Before my first ferret came to live with me, I saw a ferret in a dream--only, I didn't know what kind of animal it was. I thought it was a woodchuck. In the dream, it was in my Memphis apartment, trying to climb up on my green plaid couch. All of a sudden, it stuck its neck out really fast, like a snake, which startled me and woke me up. I wondered, "Why would a funny woodchuck be climbing up my couch?"
Heres an old personal story I found in my stash. It is about my second ferret though. My first was a sweet one that my mother and I found in a local pet store. We thought it was a wild exotic animal and had to sign papers for NJ Fish and Game to get her. We had tiny hand book from the 1940's that told us to feed her bread and milk. Luckily the pet store lady had different ideas. But poor Baby escaped outside one day. For many years, mother told me she was probably living
In 1996 I lived in Rancho Penasquitas California, and I wanted another raccoon.
As a child my mum owned a pet store, and it was our life as well as our livelihood. For me, it was always about animals, and not just the ones we had at our store, but the ones we would find leashed, crated or boxed and left on our door steps by people who knew we would do the right thing by them.
Taz is 7+ yrs old, has insulinoma and adrenal and is obese. He has ringworm and the topical medications and baths are not working for him and they seem to make it worse. My understanding is this is a ferret specific ringworm, not the type dogs get.
I have no idea where it came from, but a few months ago Spawn came down with it and after a couple vet visits with scraping and culturing it was diagnosed. We weren't able to clear it up on Spawn (RIP) either. She had insulinoma and lymphoma and was about 10 yrs old.
I don't recall the year, must have been around 1980 when a friend of mine asked me to check out the ferrets in a local pet store. He was looking to get one, but lived over an hour away. I checked on the ferrets, one latched on to my hand and would not let go. Held the ferret under running water until he released me.... my friend brought the two ferrets ... the ferret pair was not fixed, so I ended up with an albino - Farrah ferret. I fed her kitten food - she developed adrenal disease. Lucky we
How I started with ferrets. In the early 1980s one of my best friends mom had two beautiful little stableboy's. one was absolutely sweet and just loves to give kisses to everyone. The other liked the crawl into your sleeping bag and chew on your toes like they were tasty vittles. Seeing that I spent a lot of time over my friends house I got very used to having the ferrets round and absolutely fell in love with them and I decided at that point in time that someday I would be a favorite owner I just didn't know when.
I have been told that there is a ferret shelter in Spring Hill, FL by another shelter person in Winter Haven. I have a cage in excellent condition and a pack of hammocks that I would like to donate. Would prefer a 501(c)3 shelter but would consider another. please respond to [log in to unmask]
Priscilla, as you know, in ferrets IBD is a catchbucket phrase for intestinal problems that are otherwise undiagnosed.
Some ferrets with neural crest genetic variants have incorrect innervation of either of the intestines, the stomach, or a combination. The neural crest genetic variation considered to be most likely in ferrets is KIT. That variation will be why there were the blaze, the deafness, and extraneous white patches.
This is so ironic as I was cleaning out a long unused email and found daily posts from the FML. I had completely forgotten that I was having them sent that email address. So, I sent an email to BIG requesting the FML sent to my current email address. And, as I'm reading the posts, I started to reminisce on all the wonderful posts read and shared on the FML over the years. So, I am happy to be back in the loop.
It all started Bakersfield Califorina when my dauther boyfriend mom was given a ferret kit she named carol Lee
well I was over to her house one day and she come running in was this little bouncing thing I jumped on the coffee table don't know what it was at first. Well I did fall in love with her and I got one of her first littler
My son brought home a ferret from a friend of his who claimed that it was a biter, probably 17 years ago.. Never bit us!! Anyway, my first reaction was, "No way I will bond with that demented creature." Krittur was racing around the house doing the weasel war dance. My husband just loved the little guy, and of course, I grew to love him too.
A policeman brought her to the tanning salon I was managing and it was love at first sight. I gave him $100 and took my prize home. No ferret experience, zippo. I soon found out she didn't know the difference between a mouse, rat (which I knew they ate and hunted) but I was gerbil sitting. I made the mistake of leaving the gerbil cage on the floor and went to put on my makeup, Sydney always watched, it seemed to fascinate her. I looked around and there was no Sydney so I went looking for her. I found her
One of our three is in full Autumn shed now, with another beginning. Both of the ones who are shedding have a dense crew cut of beautiful incoming new fur. Plucking, combing, and brushing each can help avoid fur balls.
I had thought off and on about ferrets for some years after my sister brought home several. I never got to know hers. They were whole. Her hubby was probably dreadful to them. They divorced. He was physically abusive.
Anyway, sis said they were cute, but you could get one that used the litter box most of the time, half of the time, or rarely. You would not know what you were getting.
Since 1985 we have been involved in ferreting. We have seen literally thousands of ferrets pass through our doors since then. Our very first personal ferret was Budweiser that my son sold all of his GI Joe figurines and equipment to bring home, (You really want it? then find a way to get it). Funny thing is as kids do, his interests changed but mine grew fonder. Seeking out a vet that knew ferrets was a real challenge, but we were blessed with an exceptional wildlife/biologist/veterinarian that not only treated Budweiser but took me under his wing to educate me

These are starting and ending points, but we may be able to be a little flexible in the distance starting and ending pts. If you can help in these areas it would be much appreciated. If you know of smeon e in these areas who may be of help, pleawse fwd their contact info to me (after checking with them) .
I thought that Steve would like a ferret and he thought that i would, so we went ahead because each of us wanted the other one to be happy.
That was thirty-something years ago (32? 33?) and there was so little veterinary info on ferrets that besides being a gathering place the very limited internet of that time was the best place to find anyone with any health info on ferrets, too. The few existing books were as wrong as they were right. When the first vet text for ferrets came out we were overjoyed so we ordered two and
My husband and I met our first ferret in 1988 shortly before we got married. He was at a mall pet store (another proof of how long ago it was). We sat on the floor and played with him for an hour or so and I was in love. However, we worked both days and nights and didn't feel that it would be fair because we wouldn't have the time to dedicate to him. Fast forward almost 20 years... my husband knew a guy through work who was rehoming his ferret and Fred joined our family. A couple of years
I like this idea! I have not posted for quite a while, so I would like to share how I got captivated by these wonderful little guys. I had never even heard of ferrets and one day my sister-in-law showed me her new ferret. I was fascinated by this little guy named Bandit, and when I saw that there were ferrets for sale in the newspaper I decided to get one. I got my first ferret from a backyard breeder not knowing any better. I got bit by her (the ferret, not the breeder!) the first time I held her,
>It's sad to believe that social media may beget the demise of the FML.
I disagree - even though the FML hasn't been as active as it has in the past, maybe dropping mention of the FML on some of the social networks like Facebook pages that are for ferrets, etc, and info wwhere/how to sign up may re-invigorate the FML... I have met ferret owners in the past year or so on facebook and other places that had no idea that the FML existed - and they did sign up for the FML after telling them about it -
I was working in the IT department of the public school district in 2002 and one of my male co-workers was married to a Veterinarian. She called her hubby one Thursday asking if he knew of anyone in our shop would be interested in two free ferrets. I have since come to understand that there is no such thing as a ‘free' ferret once you start adding up all the associated maintenance costs, but that was a lesson learned. I'd always been fascinated with ferrets but never knew anyone that had one but am an animal lover, so I raised
It has been interesting already reading about how people got started. I was invited by a friend to attend a farming show in New Zealand. An aside to this was to visit a ferret farm, which I must admit I didn't know existed or what a ferret was. We travelled down and in the afternoon I met my first furry boy. He was an Albino who was to be taking a long sleep, and being a sucker for the underferret I vowed he should be allowed to come home with me. I walked around with him in the deep pocket
It was summer of 2002. I have always loved animals. I had 3 parrots, (sun conure, meyer`parrot, and a gray-cheeket parakeet). I bred parakeets and society finches too! Oh, and I can't leave out the gerbils, and cute little mouse like critters called Degu's! I had friends who owned a pet store, and helped them out working on the weekends when needed. The day was a Saturday, and I was working in the pet store. My friends got in a shipment of ferrets! I was horrified! I loved animals, - but NOT FERRETS! They were dirty, smelly creatures that bit!
GUESS WHAT? I will get to avoid more eye surgery this year. The medication changes and the pressure technique i use a few times a day (called bleb massage) are working well enough on their own.
Filming on Santa's Little Ferrets is finished, but funds are still needed for post-production costs such as film festival fees, DVD duplication, music rights, etc. If you donate, you will get fuzzy rewards such as ferret flash drives, ferret plush toys and free download of the completed film!
Someone stated today that Facebook and social media would create the demise of the FML. Nothing could be more wrong.
BIG is still here and as long as he breathes the FML will be here. Archeologists have found back issues of the FML etched in stone tablets dating from the time of the dinosaur and older. The FML is just one of those things of the age. The three oldest things on this planet are Dirt, the burger and the FML. Even the Pyramids have an issue of the FML written on the walls in hieroglyphics. The Dead Sea Scrolls
Being a wildlife biologist and having worked thru school in a vertebrate museum, I had seen and raised all kinds of domestic and wild critters over the years. My wife, a now retired RN, worked night shift at a local hospital in CA and some of the other nurses there had ferrets. Unbeknownst to me, she arranged to have a new kit brought into our household. She prefaced his arrival by saying to me."I have found you the perfect pet". Thus, Bubba arrived on the scene to our household of 4 cats. 8 to 10 weeks old and from a
For me, it started with a fostering of a Jill who gave birth to her kits with us. We had her just three weeks but showed us we wanted more.
Next came two unwanted older males, cage and all from a friend's girlfriend. I'll cared for we only had one for a week then the other six months. From there we bought 3. I wish I had found rescues back then but internet savvy I was not.
Our first ferret was Nora. One day in the summer of 1997 our son Dan came home from a friend's house with a cage and a female ferret. Now we had seen "Beastmaster" and loved the ferrets in the movie. We had always wanted one. Thanks to the Ferret Association of Connecticut, we were instructed on how to care for our little friend. We named her Nora and were told that she was about 2 years old. The first time she did the war dance I freaked out.
Cindy Featherling asked me to post this picture of this 3-legged kitty. For those of you who would like to help this young lady with the bill here is a picture of the work done on the kitty.

Jumping on the 'Way Back machine' I remember the days before FaceBook when I couldn't wait for my copy of the FML to show up in my inbox. It's sad to believe that social media may beget the demise of the FML. So I would like to toss out a challenge to the group to send in some happiness.
I received an email about three ferrets in Artesia, New Mexico that the owners need to re home. I have asked for more details to be sent and will post that when I find out. There is a 2 story Ferret Nation included in the deal. I am getting stretched here and cannot take them. If someone can take them pm back to me and I will forward their letter. I hope there is someone on this list who can find room in their heart and home for three more kids.
I'm appealing to all my ferret community for help once again, I know not only are you ferret lovers, but you love all animals. The proof is right her laying beside me. I remember how you all helped this poor guy when he had his leg mangled by some cruel people that tied a rope around it. He's doing great and trust me, runs from anyone else, he's terrified of men. There is a young lady that rescued a kitten about a year ago, she got out of the house and ended up being hit by a car, at least
I want to Thank all of you in the ferret community that have made donations to help save a cat's life. He made it through the surgery fine and is coming home tomorrow. When I called at 8:30 this morning and found out that the bill had been paid in full I burst in tears. I hardly slept last night worrying about the cat and how in the world I was going to pay the vet bill, but because of all you caring and wonderful people here on the FML that burden has been lifted, now I can focus on

I am in the process of organizing a ferret transport for a paralyzed male ferret. We hope to be ready to move him to Cathy Furreti who is now in Daytona Beach, Fla. Our goal is to make the transport during the weekend of Augiust 15, 16, 17.
Currently, Jill the Director of The Ferret Manor Rescue is gaining access to the ferret. They are coordinating wth Ann Church to get her to Ann. Ann will then lead off the transport and can go about an hour or so south of Mancehester, Ohio. (southeast corner of Ohio on the Kentucky
Looking for a ferret vet in the Birmingham area besides The Ark Animal Hospital. They charge $92.70 for a wellness check, which doesn't include any vaccinations, bloodwork or anything. Ouch.
Someone recommended Riverview Animal Hospital in Birmingham. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Good Morning.
After some thorough investigation to ensure the safety and well-being of the Prairie Dogs and decision-making on the part of the owners, I am happy to report that the pair will be re homed to a privately-owned zoo in Tennessee. This was at the suggestion of a friend in rescue here in the mid-south.
I had many people from the western part of the country contact me contact information had suggestions in reference to this situation. Ferret people never cease to amaze me. When someone is in trouble and needs help, the ferret community is always ready to do whatever they can.
I have tried to reply to everyone that wrote to me to thank them for their response, and also to update them on the situation.
We have cared for several prairie dogs here at Critter Camp! They are unique and can be an ok pet for the right people -- they do need lots and lots of attention. Their bite can be very strong as well. So the very best resource for prairie dogs as pets is: http://www.prairiedoglover.com/ They can tell you about laws and resources near you.
Today, someone from the greater Los Angeles area posted in the AFA Facebook group that Fish and Game had entered their home without a warrant and confiscated their ferret.
While there may be other legal issues involved, right now the primary focus is on making certain the ferret is not euthanized, but instead sent to an out of state ferret shelter.
This is a basic year for Oxford Ferret Rescue owned by Claudia Johnson. It helps to understand why rescues are always doing fund raisers and asking for donations.
In 2013, the vet bill alone was $26,000 prior to my discount - which TRULY helps alot. On average our big fundraiser at the Cecil County Fairgrounds will clear $4000-5000. So, we need to fill in the gaps. In addition to the vet bills, there are other costs with running the rescue which consists of over 70 ferrets, 80% of those over the age of 5 and many of those on daily

Good Morning,
Anyone out there with any experience (good experience, hopefully) with Prairie Dogs?
I have been contacted by a lady living in southern Mississippi who bought a pair of Prairie Dogs from a Mississippi pet store last year. Bought them as babies, of course. Surprise, surprise, her teenage son who received the pair as a gift is no longer handling them and caring for them. She says the Prairie Dogs have become somewhat difficult... great... So, I get the contact.
Principal photography has been completed on "Santa's Little Ferrets," a half hour, live-action Christmas TV Special. It tells the story of how Santa Claus really delivers the presents on Christmas Eve, with the help of three highly trained ferrets!
Director/producer Allison Parker is currently running an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds to cover the post-production costs of DVD duplication, film festival entry fees, music clearance, marketing and merchandise production. For a small contribution you can get rewards such as ferrety flash drives, your and your ferret's names in the credits, access to the program online before it's released, plush ferret
I had never heard of this 1/2 hr show before, but recorded it because the episode title was "An Elevated Ferret Alert", 7/24/14 on TruTV. It's a cross between a magic show and prank show. So, the very last prank of the episode he is pretending to work at a car wash/detail place, woman brings her car in. He looks inside and identifies "pellets" and tells her she might have an infestation of something and asks her if she wants him to check. She's freaked and says yes. He brings out a cage on a pole, rustles it in the
has anyone knowledge of an allergic reaction 3+ weeks after receiving the implant. We have had a couple of ferrets that broke out in a rash and no explanation as to why - 3 weeks seems like too long of over night showing a rash all over their body.
Millie Sanders at Txferretrescue.org with Texas Ferret Lovers Rescue and connecting Foster homes and sanctuaries
We have had several ferrets that were suspected of stroke. ... sudden onset head tilt, circling, difficulty eating/ drinking. We used high doses of steroids for several days and then titrated down, syringed nutrition/ hydration. Either we had really good luck or the steroids were the answer. We have also had sililiar symptoms that were caused by ruptured eardrums- we used prophalactic antibiotics and short term steroids- eardrums take a while to resolve.
Have you ever noticed that people and pets begin to look alike? One thing I have noticed about many people in the ferret world is that they too are noctural. Don't believe me? Just look on FB at midnight or check the time stamp on your e-mails from them! Those running shelters, like their ferrets are always running around many directions, getting into things. Quite often they are very social, another ferret characteristic. Although I have met a few who are not quite as social and more particular in who they hang with - a female ferret characteristic perhaps?
Cathy, I do have the dark circles around my eyes like a mask, does that count? And yes, I am nocturnal I would do much better if I lived alone, and didn't have to go to bed at a so called normal time. I would stay up all night doing stuff.
(but I don't live alone, and I'd like to continue it that way for a long long long time longer.) (that sentence right there, is what is known as a Sue sentence. It may not be pretty, but it works! ) :)
Suspected primary hypoparathyroidism in a domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo).
de Matos RE1, Connolly MJ, Starkey SR, Morrisey JK.
Abstract Case Description - A 4-year-old castrated male domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was examined because of a 3-week history of intermittent seizures, signs of depression, hypocalcemia, and hyperphosphatemia.
I had a ferret who fell from the top of his crate and injured his inner ear (unbeknownst to us at the time). It began to necrose, and eventually within 6 weeks, he exhibited those same signs. When we took him to the vet, they did everything they could think of, to no avail, and when we let him go, asked to have a necropsy done. They found that the inner ear had pretty much disintegrated, and of course, the toxins invaded every part of his little system. I rue this situation to this day.
We hope that this has been a good summer for you and your fuzzies. Check out the latest MaFF newsletter, at http://maferrets.org/fuzzy/TheFuzzyPapers_August2014.pdf
We hope to see you on 8/16/14 at noon, for a cookout in Woburn, MA. Kathy Street and her family are hosting a potluck and cookout, and we will have a chance to plan our big frolic too. RSVP to [log in to unmask] for details, and to let us know what you can bring. This event is for the humans only, but the ferret residents and foster ferrets at Kathy's will be happy
My ferret stopped eating and became very lethargic, seemingly overnight. Then today, I noticed her tumbling and lying down sideways and staying that way, so I took her to our local vet. She diagnosed an external ear infection, rehydrated her, and sent her home with antibiotics.
My ferret got worse, so I took her to another vet for a second opinion. This vet thinks it might be neurological - brain cancer was her guess. My ferret is currently hospitalized.
What is the best kind of toothpaste to use for our fuzzies? I am getting low on the one I am using on my Charlie (have been using a cat one from our pet store). I had a different one with my other fuzzies but for the life of me can't remember what it was called! Figures.
I'm currently writing a series called Animal Champions for SmallAnimalChannel.com. I am looking for people to write about who have benefited animals in one way or another. Anyone can be a champion. A rabbit that inspired a special needs shelter to be built, a fireman who rescues a ferret, an inventor, etc. It can be a one time deed, it doesn't always have to be ongoing or anything "big". I am looking for stories involving small mammal pets such as ferrets, guinea pigs, mice, rats, gerbils, chinchillas, hamsters, rabbits, short tailed opossums, fennec fox, and so on.
Over this last weekend I flew to the Minneapolis area for my high school's once every four years' all class reunion. (Minnetonka High School west of Minneapolis) They had a breakfast at the school Saturday morning and later a tour of the school. I didn't see anyone there that I knew so I just sat down by a woman who seemed alone. After some small talk she asked what I do and I told her I rescue ferrets. What? She has two ferrets, is on this list and probably going to read this. She has taken in some needy ferrets
Hi Carol! It was great meeting and talking with you!
Yes, it was really more than a coincidence that we met there. I overslept and had planned to be there an hour earlier and would have never met her. When Carol sat down next to me and told me she ran a ferret shelter, I asked, "did you say FERRET?". Of all the people to sit next to there at the reunion breakfast, that just blew me away! Around here, there are not many people who know what a ferret is, let alone have one. So we had a lot
In Chattanooga: Dr Hester of Middle Valley Animal Hospital 423-842-6758. Excellent on all levels (bed side, education, and an excellent surgeon). Prices very reasonable.
Also in Chattanooga: Dr Tai Frederico. Excellent for general care. Have had mixed results with serious problems. On one hand he diagnosed a difficult heart condition no one else could. On the other hand, I have seen him stumped ... but he listens and researches right there on the spot and things were resolved for the most part. He has won awards in this area.
Of course, if the thymus was not enlarged and the chest fluids were analyzed with actual bacteria, then that would not be the case, ditto if necropsy showed a major heart or (more rare) lung disorder/deformation.
It really reads like one of the common presentations of Juvenile Lymphoma, though. JL, which usually occurs in the first two years of life, is not very common and usually kills very rapidly. There is no treatment that works for it. Not all experienced vets have encountered it, so it does not come to mind readily. Also, it is
Awhile back, I won an auction item from Kindness Matters shelter in Georgia. I have got to share! I worked with ECDDECALSHACK.COM to design a fabulous metal fence sign! They asked for my ideas, they happily made changes and it was promptly sent. And - I could not be happier. Please check out their website to see really cool vehicle decals & signs. And thank you
Morning dawned cool and foggy at the Rainbow Bridge. The fog was so thick, The Receiving Angel did not see the white ferret until he heard a loud DOOK and the fog lifted like someone pulled a blanket away. There stood a white ferret, paws on her hips, looking around.
"Hello to you," the little ferret said. "What might you be, you with the wings?"
I will be phasing out all my CDs of ferret art. Each CD has from 250 to 500 drawings that you are free to use on T-shirts, posterswsletters or what. When these have sold I will not be making anymore CDs, but I will still be doing original drawings.. for shelters and ferret . You can see the CDs on Facebook in a number of ferret clubs or any of my pages. If your interested but don't use FB, Please email me and I will send you the CD info.
Been cleaning out stashes again. No not the ferret stashes, but my own stashes. Found some ferret harness / leash sets that we don't use anymore and wanted to see if anyone here wanted them. Would appreciate whoever takes them to cover shipping costs, but otherwise the items are free. The leashes are 6 foot long. The harnesses are what I think they call the H style (one part goes around the neck, the other part goes around under the arms). They connect with velcro. We did adjust most of them to fit smaller ferrets, so probably won't work on

you will notice that numerous parts of the U.S. are going through an upswing in rabies rates, in some places a sharp upswing, in vector animals in recent weeks.
For more about rabies prevention look up CDC rabies http://www.cdc.gov/rabies/
and the relevant compendium at the NASPHV website: http://www.nasphv.org/documentsCompendia.html
In the past for ferrets rabies vaccinations have protected animals from disease, but have *****protected even MORE ferrets from needless euthanasia***** when scratches or nips have happened outside the ferrets' families.
Debbie, I will gladly join in with others to work on some ferret sheltering guidelines. BTW, I did ask the woman what vet she used and she wouldn't give me the information.
I've been lurking the FML reading & absorbing the healthy banter on this topic but one thing I see being overlooked is the original source of the info this woman received. If I recall correctly she was told by her Veterinarian that "...ferrets don't need to be seen by a vet, except for an emergency, and they don't need vaccinations." While her obstinate refusal to listen to an experienced shelter Op is extremely frustrating, she is acting from the advice of a professional she has put her faith & trust in. How many new ferret owners
I'm not sure how this happened but I went to sleep for my afternoon nap, and I woke up in a very strange place. I was dreaming I was flying, but ferrets don't fly, and I woke up sleeping on some soft white stuff. It was very comfy and very snuggly and I just pulled it up to my chin. It was soooo soft and warm. As I opened my eyes, I saw a man with wings standing near me with a big book.
Your emails were right on and we need to thank Debbie for her post not bash her.
NOT only is it important to take a ferret to the vet when it is sick, it is also important to do so when you first get a ferret in to get it vaccinated, for protection and for a health exam. Most states I believe do require rabies vaccination (required by a licensed vet) and we all know the dangers of distemper. I don't care how many shelters have different ways of handling things, to me this is basics. Even an experience shelter
I'm sure everyone has good intentions but I am also as sure that if you've been involved with humans in any regard, you have come across at least one who has the personality I garnered about this woman ... ignorant, not necessarily stupid but definitely ignorant, and too ignorant to realize how asinine they are being.
then I wonder if it might also eventually be a treatment for ferret coronaviruses or point to possible other treatments if it turns out to be too dangerous to use, while we all continue to hope that vaccine work pans out.
chemical, called K22, halts growth of a panel of different coronaviruses, including the strains that cause MERS and SARS, researchers report May 29 in PLOS Pathogens.
Resend since this appears to have been lost in the ether. Even a copy I sent myself to make sure messages were transiting properly was lost during that temporary problem. Anyway, this IS ferret related but has to give some non-ferret info, too, to get the points across. I will copy myself to see if this mail works.
Have any of you looked up "twit" in the dictionary? A twit is someone stupid or foolish. Anyone putting even ONE of these precious lives at risk is both stupid & foolish. ESPECIALLY a shelter. We are supposed to know better.
People call shelters/sanctuaries all the TIME for advice. They are looking for answers, and they look to us, the experts, for help. So, if a trip to the vet is "money wasted," a ferret with green, smelly, slimy diarrhea would die a painful and horrible death, because it didn't get medical attention. After all, the shelter operator is the
Debbie, I totally understand your frustration, been there done that got the t-shirt. we all know by now that no matter what you put on here someone is going to get angry. I personally think we are to politically correct. I think people look for a reason to get mad. With that said I totally understand where you are coming from. We are here to help not to get ignored. It is hard when you help someone and they turn their nose up at it. I guess if we were being politically correct she is stupid. See everyone that doesn't
If that person (in TN, was it?) who has barely any ferret experience at all and who insists that ferrets do not need vaccinations or much vet care still wants to become a ferret shelter then perhaps what might help most would be for the right shelter mentor to be found to teach her. Someone else might click with her, or maybe hearing the same basics from multiple people would help.
I agree I shouldn't have called the woman a twit. I do stand by putting her name and city out there. I feel strongly if she opens a rescue, it is a matter of time before the rest of us are asked to pick up the pieces and we need to know the person weÂ’re dealing with.
It had been very hot and muggy at the Bridge and even The Receiving Angel had trouble keeping his wings dry. Bluebird was panting and trying to fine a cool spot, but she was not having much luck.
The newest arrivals for the past several months were waiting at the Bridge for greetings and family, but the Bridge Greeters were melting and several had to take a short leave.

Good Morning,
Its been a long, long time since anyone has heard from me. Financial disaster and deep, deep depression took over my life all of last year after the loss of my husband in the fall of 2012. Almost lost everything.
Many kind and wonderful people extended themselves to me but I just couldn't face anything at that time. Unanswered letters and emails.... I just "quit" on everyone and myself. I am so sorry. I was in a deep dark place and wanted to be alone. But, I wasn't alone.
When a person who inexperienced and downright ignorant about health (and unwilling or unable to provide vet care) becomes a shelter there are multiple bad outcomes including but not limited to:
Hoarding
Abuse
Needless suffering and pain
Poor instruction of others
The transmission of infectious diseases which can kill the shelter ferrets and pets in the homes of those who adopt and sometimes those who just visit
I thought about it and almost said yes send me her info I have a outline I made up of the things you need to do a real rescue service. Also, SOS has now a website to help those wanting to do rescue. But then if she is already arguing with someone who has experience, the only thing that is going to teach her is experience itself - which is at the cost of some ferrets. It's sad but some people are so set in their ways they already know more than anyone else out there. If she gets into

In what might go down in history as the second greatest Craigslist posting ever -- right behind this Texas ad for a Jeep Wrangler -- someone posted the above advertisement about a lost pet in Richmond, Virginia.
As some of you might know this will be the last issue of the Ferrets of the FML Calendar. With increasing postage and printing rates it makes it hard to have a fundraiser that raises funds while keeping the calendar at an affordable price for all you fans.
Since we won't have Ferret Depot as a sponsor for this calendar it makes your involvement even more important to this final issue. So, I am here asking for your help to make this last calendar the best ever.
A woman, Heather Ralston from Spring City, Tennessee, contacted me saying she's opening a ferret rescue. The woman has had two pet ferrets for five years. Her vet told her ferrets don't need to be seen by a vet, except for an emergency, and they don't need vaccinations. When I explained the medical issues and how much money my rescue has spent on vet bills the last few months, she told me I wasted my money and it was absurd. I sent her all my ferret information emails, along with links explaining about distemper and other medical issues. I'm happy
I am sorry to have to even post this. But what gives ANYONE the right to call some one a :"twit" because they want to open a shelter. I've talked to the lady and maybe I agree or disagree with her but it doesn't mean she is a twit. We are suppose to give advice and inform, but this is a ambush. Sheltering is like a duck soup recipe and you can ask 10 shelters and you won't get the same recipe from any of them. Yes, she called several shelters asking questions and gathering info.
I too was offended by the post made by Debbie of Kindness Matters. And, I was a little surprised that Bill allowed such a trash post on the FML. All of us who have been in rescue/sheltering have made a LOT of stupid assumptions and mistakes. Few of us were ready for what was coming our way. I'm sure most of us have been trashed behind our backs because of how we operate our rescues; Debbie and I both included. None of us do things the same way, and some of us have to learn the hard way. But, slapping
I'm a long time reader, first time poster. I've been following the recent posts about the lady wanting to open a shelter, and I just wanted to say that I probably would have done exactly what Debbie did if I had gotten the same type of responses. I completely understand the concern for the health and well being of the fuzzbutts that would be in her care. I have only been a ferret owner for a few years now, all of them rescues from bad homes and/or people that couldn't care for them anymore. I have read

Our Haleakala decades ago was a retired breeder who raised many litters but was retired when amounting male put a canine through one of her eyes and she refused thereafter to have anything to do with adult ferrets, especially males.
Anyway, in sorting through old budget books for recycling I found a receipt that I know predated her use of a veterinary ophthalmologist, and it tells me that Holly was older than we had thought because I can place events with this as an anchor. We had been thinking that she was nine at death. Actually, if we use the
She found my scraping of litter pots to be exciting enough to let one go. The mind of a weasel...
This is her first full strength poof since before 6/10 after compresses were insufficient when she impacted from an anal gland infection so had expression, scraping, culture and antibiotic challenge, with general antibiotic first which then was followed by a targeted one when the challenge was done.
Depending on how rapidly a deteriorating senior in assisted living goes downhill there might arise a rapid need to find a place in AZ, preferably in the greater Phoenix region (Tempe, Mesa, etc.), which takes elderly cats with health problems including Feline Leukemia. One family member in that area can not take the cat because her own are healthy and doing so would endanger them. The other two have children who go into allergy problems like acute asthma attacks if around cats.
As you know, the involvement of Neural Crest genetic variants and neoteny (childlike characteristics carried into adulthood), extraneous spots (usually white), ease of domestication, and possible alterations to at least one adrenal cortex function (less hair-trigger release of epinephrine/ adrenaline) have been discussed as being connected many times on F-G, FHL, and FML. Yes, this is the topic sometimes inaccurately called the "Star Gene" which is a very outdated term since multiple types of neural crest genetic variants at more than one genetic locus can each cause such changes and some can be cumulative due to occurring T different
It was with great sadness I learned yesterday of Steve's death on June 19, his 54th birthday. A familiar face and smiling presence at Ferret Symposia, Steve was presented with a special achievement award by the International Ferret Congress in Phoenix in 2011. Steve donated freely to the ferret community and worked with his customers to help always get them the best price and product for their ferrets.
This is part of a message I sent to the FML on May 3, 2005:
>We are pleased to report that as a result of discussions with Steve >Yarborough of The Ferret Depot during the 2005 International Ferret >Symposium, they have agreed to start removing some of the "less than >ideal" ferret products from their shelves, including foods and treats >that contain dried fruit and/or high sugar content. > >Some products will be removed immediately, some over the next few >weeks. They recently printed a catalog that has these products listed, >but they will be removed from the web site,
The Crafty Weasels have completed all our current requests for bedding and are awaiting new requests. Shelters in need of new or additional bedding please email your request to me at [log in to unmask]
Please include the shelter name, operator, approximate number of ferrets, type of cages you use and address you would like bedding sent to. Ferrets in hospice or foster homes can be included in your count or you may send an additional request for bedding to be shipped directly to them.
When I re-read my post from yesterday, I realized it sounded like ALL of Sandi`s hospice kids had passed. Not so!!!
Dog Bone (the little heart patient) is still with us! He still toddles around the room, explores, and hunts for treats to stash. He loves to be scritched. He is doing well on his meds--and to look at him, one would never know he has any health issues at all. He has a beautiful coat, for an oldster. He is a total joy--and Each day with him is a gift.
Interesting study; thanks for the ref. If I interpreted these findings from the study correctly, does that mean and a month of a ferret's life would be perceived by the ferret as a human would a year?
To the anonymous poster that said "Breeders need to step up to the plate".
It's a very unfair assumption that it's the breeders who are not stepping up to take their babies back. I think the bigger question here is do the breeders know that this person needs to re-home the ferrets. I am going to go out on a very big limb here and stay that MOST BREEDERS that I am in association with would gladly "step up to the plate" if they knew that their babies needed to come back home.
Salute! (I can see you through the monitor, SmartPhone, and iPad)
It is my responsibility as junior operative to convey to the FLO that Remmie requested to be relocated to the outpost called Heaven last Thursday. MOM (Modulator of Molder ~ look it up) found the handsome agent in an insulinomic coma, gave honey on gums ("BTDT", she said), plopped him in the Humvee in a towel with her right hand comforting him, praying, and drove like a maniac to the local vet. He passed on the way.
Thank you for all the bouquets being tossed towards me, the last couple of days. I don`t know what to say <3.
Sandi, It was a pleasure taking in your hospice kids. (For those who don`t know, we didn`t have long together--all were 7 & 8 years old, and unstable) but they finished it out comfortably & happily--and TOGETHER! To have torn apart a bonded group, in the sunset of their lives, would have been really sad. It was great to meet them all, and love them for as long as we were blessed to have them. I was so
It is really nice to see the kind things that people have written about Zoo. They are true...and more: More than most could imagine. Her love of ferrets runs true and deep; all the way to Gods ear. I think it is his right one. :-) When she dies, she is going to be besieged by thousands of little ones, and bask in their love without ferret poop.
Our state news on Tv, which has a strong history of getting scientific, medical, and statistical reports wrong just had a teaser about weather perhaps affecting rates of uroliths. Ferrets, of course, get uroliths, with three types most likely.
It makes sense that weather could play a part since aspects like heat and drought might alter the amounts of dissolved minerals in water, with well water probably being more variable than many public sources, while insufficient hydration is a greater risk with high temps and drought.
A friend of mine has decided she can no longer afford financially or time-wise to keep ferrets and wishes to rehome them. There are ten and they range in age from 3 years and up. You can get more information on the ferrets available (many privately bred) by calling Jan at 412-260-4718. I was given permission to post her phone number (cell).
>A friend of mine has decided she can no longer afford financially or >time-wise to keep ferrets and wishes to rehome them.... You can get >more information on the ferrets available (many privately bred)...
If she can't financially care for her ferrets. She needs to contact the breeder whom she purchased those privately bred ferrets and make arrangements to return them back to ferretry.
While I am not personally familiar with the situation, there was some discussion of this on FB among some breeders, and someone familiar with the specifics said that the ferrets came from breeders who are no longer breeding and no longer even have ferrets. According to that person, who is not an FML member, the ferrets are OK for now, but would be better off in new homes. The current owner apparently has some health problems, and that is part of the reason she wants to place them in new homes.
I'm not sure how much I can help you regarding cystine bladder stones, but I think some ferrets are genetically predisposed.
I had one of the first known ferrets to have cystine bladder stones back in 1992. Way back then there was no reference, no medications, no anything because only struvite stones had been seen in ferrets (at least in my general area). Claudia was a pet store ferret. She went through two separate surgeries to remove the stones. We tried lower protein diets and supplementing with cottage cheese (which she was NOT having); we tried prescription
Dan, do you know what kind of bladder stones these are? Knowing what they are is extremely important in deciding whether or not Zupreem grain free food might be responsible. When your second ferret has surgery, you need to have your vet send one of the stones to a lab for examination if this was not done when your first ferret developed stones.
Have YOU ever personally wondered if a worldwide underground weasel organization existed? have you ever suspected that the innocent-looking ferret in your very own home might possibly have ties to such an organization? Or have such thoughts never crossed your mind?????
A brave and courageous author has now dared to expose the hidden plot by writing an alleged "children's picture book" about this vast conspiracy and its agenda. I'm referring to "Weasels," by Elys Dolan. This book is so good that I think I might have to actually BUY it. (note: this time, I'm not going to try to include
Long-time lurker here, but due to recent events I'm looking for some opinions/suggestions. I apologize in advance for the length of this post.
I'm a first-time ferret parent, but I've had my 2 girls since April 2011. Noodle is just over 3 years old, and Princess turns 4 in a couple weeks. Both are Marshall girls, purchased from a local Petco.
It states all carnivores except domestic dogs and domestic cats fall under Dangerous Wild Animals. That includes ferrets.
The document may be found here: http://apps.sos.wv.gov/adlaw/csr/readfile.aspx?DocId=25971
And here is a link to a petition that has a draft letter. It's written from the point of view of an aquarium & reptile hobbyist, but is a good starting point.
Im not so sure that you have interpreted this correctly. No where in that document does it list ferrets, nor does it clearly state that
"It states all carnivores except domestic dogs and domestic cats fall under Dangerous Wild Animals."
I could not find that sentence anywhere here - Could you possibly clarify or point out where it specifically states this? http://apps.sos.wv.gov/adlaw/csr/readfile.aspx?DocId=25971
Hello, this was several years ago but my friend shipped her 2 ferrets to me from CA. I believe all she needed was a vet reference saying the were healthy enough to fly (and maybe shots). I also had a ferret shipped from the other side of the country. Both times the ferrets arrived safe and sound and the airline did a good job of getting them off the plane ASAP. I would recommend putting several layers of blankets/puppy pads etc on the bottom of the crate, the water bottle gets it very wet. Good luck,I'm sure your baby will
We have a ferret in California where they are illegal (don't ask how it happened). We are now moving out of California and are wondering if we can legally FLY her out of the state. Has anyone done this or can comment on the legality of the whole thing? I could see how it MIGHT be legal, seeing as you're taking an illegal pet OUT of the state. But I have no idea, so I'm hoping you guys have input on this!
I was able to fly ferrets out of Calif in 2008, but not in 2009. I never got a clear answer as to why the difference.
I was using an expensive and good animal transport firm the first time, and was doing it without that kind of help in 2009. But I'm thinking it was more a matter of some kind of changed policy.
Last year, I had both a light heart attack & stroke. This left me pretty sick.
I'd talked to Zoo about my 5 very, very bonded kids. She agreed they needed to stay together, despite what others thought should be done. A very sweet friend drove my car- fuzzies & I to Zoo's. We stayed the weekend. When I met Zoo & saw some 10 yr old fuzz butts, I knew my kids were in the most wonderful of homes.
I didn't know you experienced so many physical problems Sandi. I was very sorry to read that in your post. But I'm glad you were able to work it out so that your little ones went all together to Zoo's Ferret Sanctuary. She has to be the single most knowledgeable and very possibly the most loving and giving ferret person I've ever known. Of course, she'll also deny that, because she's so humble, but I can only imagine how many ferrets and ferret people she's helped in her life. I know she's helped me a few times, even once in
It has taken me more than a week to write this. My sweet Boomer left for the Rainbow Bridge with the help of our vet and with me whispering in his ear how much I loved him.
My daughter had bought him to me after hiding him out in her dorm room for a few days. He had been on craigslist and hadn't been out of his cage in years. He was a huge silver panda and the sweetest guy ferret ever. His legs were very weak from inactivity. He could barely walk at first....then he never walked again.....he bounced.....
